Cafes and Restaurants

 

Noise, traffic jams, too loud music at night and other characteristics of mass tourism – do not exist on Lastovo. You can find a quiet cove and a secluded place even in the top season. Good accommodation and food are offered in the hotel with boat docking facilities, in private accommodation and at a camping site under centuries-old olive trees. All senses will enjoy the Lastovo cuisine offered in numerous restaurants, taverns or family farm restaurants in the fields. You can also enjoy sipping coffee in cafes while watching the life of the temperamental small places. If you want fresh fish, there is also a fishmonger selling fish and sea food.

The inhabitants of Lastovo are known for being gourmets; they like good food and drinks, which is also seen in original recipes. Many old recipes are still used today, which proves that they could provide a menu for all generations with minimum ingredients, that is, with organic, naturally produced food grown on their farms (which is their priority today, as well). The vicinity of the sea provided them with an abundance of sea food, which they prepared in a special, local way.
Specialities include ćimule (sea kale flowers) with olive oil, chickpeas with salted sardines, chromis chromis (small dark fish eaten only in May), lobster prepared in various ways, boiled fish, sardines grilled on sword-like skewers, red scorpion fish brodetto, lamb and kid cooked under iron bells.... And it is all accompanied with plavac mali and rukatac red and white wine.
There are also interesting desserts prepared all over Dalmatia, but with a special Lastovo touch: prkle (fritule) – small spicy doughnuts, skalice (kroštule) – thin crispy cookie stripes, and kotonjata, almost forgotten old quince dessert, which used to be prepared for special guests.

Various kinds of fruit, plants and herbs grown or growing on the island are used for various kinds of brandy, such as lemon, orange, carob, medicinal herbs, but also rose petals. Besides the agricultural cooperative, which produces wine and olive oil, there is also a smaller one producing jams and various kinds of brandy using traditional Lastovo recipes, which are original Lastovo souvenirs.
